5 Things to Do in Memphis This Weekend: 7/13 - 7/15
Happy Friday the 13th, everybody. Here are five awesome things to do with the next three days:
1. Underground at the Cotton Museum, Cotton Museum, Friday, 6 p.m., free
Memphis sculptor Greely Myatt is bringing some of his new, uniquely Southern works in wood, metal and found objects to the Cotton Museum this weekend. The opening party is tonight from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m., but the show will be up through July.
2. "Psycho" and "The Shining" Double Feature, Orpheum Theatre, Friday, 7 p.m., $7 adults, $5 kids
Celebrate Friday the 13th with back-to-back classic horror movies at the Orpheum. Hitchcock's classic "Psycho" is a little more appropriate for younger viewers than "The Shining", which contains "disturbing images, terror, language and brief graphic nudity".
3. Bastille Day, Children's Museum of Memphis, Saturday, 11 a.m., free with museum admission
The U.S. doesn't have another real national holiday until September, but we can always borrow somewhere else's celebrations. Bring your family to the Children's Museum's Bastille Day celebration (which commemorates the destruction of the Bastille by an angry mob during the French Revolution) with crafts, history lessons and more.
4. Memphis Roller Derby Double Header, Pipkin Building at Tiger Lane, Saturday, 6 p.m., $12
The hardcore ladies of Memphis Roller Derby are having their last regular season games at the Pipkin Building on Saturday night. The all-star Hustlin' Rollers will play Assassination City (Dallas) at 6 p.m., and the Women of Mass Destruction will play the Angels of Death at 7:30. There's beer, barbecue and merch, and you can pick up advance tickets for $10 at Goner Records.
5. James Taylor, Mud Island Amphitheatre, July 15, 8 p.m., $49 – $79, all ages
For those of you into things that are a little more mellow, folk singer James Taylor is playing an outdoor show at the Mud Island Amphitheatre on Sunday. Tickets are still available.
If none of these events are your thing, there are plenty more on the blog's calendar. No matter what you do this weekend, I hope you have a blast. Come back and tell me about it on Monday.
