365 Things to Do in Memphis #191: Tune in to Memphis' Most Unique Radio Station

If you don't like the music playing on WEVL, wait an hour - the station changes formats every two hours or so. Assignment #191 in the 365 Things to Do in Memphis is to set your radio dial at 89.9 FM and listen to Memphis' only volunteer radio station.

WEVL, Memphis, Tenn.

The tiny station to the extreme left of the FM dial is the city’s only volunteer radio station. There is a paid staff of two and a half, but the majority of the work it takes to keep the station on the air is done by a cadre of volunteer DJs, programmers and fund-raisers.

The eclectic music selection - which runs from indie garage rock to old school country to Hawaiian music - comes from the station's volunteer programmers, whose only limitations are those set by the FCC. Anyone can volunteer to host a show (I do it!).

You don't have to be in Memphis to listen to WEVL - if you're out of the city (or the country), you can stream the station live via their website.
