365 Things to Do #185: It's Hot, Find a Pool
For the past week, the temperature has been hovering somewhere between 98 degrees and hell's boiler room, and no amount of popsicles or seems to be helping. When it's this sticky outside, you need a pool (or the equivalent). Assignment #185 in the 365 Things to Do in Memphis is to find a body of water and get in it.
If you're not lucky enough to have a pool in your backyard, these are your options:
- Go to one of the city's 13 free, public outdoor swimming pools. They're open from 1 p.m. until 6 p.m. Tuesday - Saturday during the summer.
- Buddy up to a friend that's got passes for a private pool. Usually, college students or alumni with pool passes can bring guests (same goes for country clubs, athletic centers and the JCC.) If you're planning to do a ton of swimming, just go ahead and get a membership. If you go to the pool often enough, it'll pay for itself. Note - anyone can join the pools at Rhodes or the U of M for the summer.
- For those of you who are more the type to run through a sprinkler, there are three splash parks in the Memphis area, two in Collierville and one in Cooper-Young.
- If you prefer a more outdoorsy swimming experience, here's a list of all of the lakes in the Mid-South.
- And lastly, if you need something to look forward to, the Children's Museum is opening a splash park next summer.
Where are your favorite pools? Did I leave a good one off of the list? Let me know in the comments.
