Listen Up: 10 Bands to See in June
Ed. note: The nice thing about living in a music city is that we get a ton of great live shows every single month. The tough thing, however, is deciding which bands to see. With that in mind, here are 10 recommendations for shows you won't want to miss this month:
1. Drake, FedExForum, June 5, 7 p.m., $42 - $148
Grammy nominated rapper Drake is stopping at the FedExForum this week as part of his Club Paradise Tour. And while Drake is great and all, I think I'm mostly excited that he's going to have Waka Flocka Flame with him.
2. Rev. John Wilkins, Brooks Museum of Art, June 9, 11 a.m., free
The Brooks is having a free concert on their patio as part of the opening festivities for "The Soul of a City: Memphis Collects African American Art" on Saturday, June 9. Gospel guitarist and pastor of Hunter’s Chapel Church Rev. John Wilkins will play from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m.
3. I <3 the 80s Party, Mollie Fontaine Lounge, June 9, 11 p.m., free, 21 and up
DJ's Diamond Dave and Justin Hand are bringing their popular (and super fun) 80s night back to the Mollie Fontaine Lounge on Saturday, June 9. Costumes are optional, but highly encouraged.
4. Live at the Garden: Chicago, Memphis Botanic Garden, June 16, 6:30, $40, all ages
Come on - you know you've always wanted to hear "25 or 6 to 4" played live. Or maybe not. Either way, the Botanic Garden's Live at the Garden series is only partially about the music. It's also about hanging out on blankets with elaborate picnics and seeing and being seen. Gates open at 6:30, the music starts at 8:30.
5. Todd Snider's What the Folk Fest, Levitt Shell, June 16, 7 p.m., free, all ages
Singer songwriter Todd Snider is bringing a handful of his friends to the Levitt Shell for the What the Folk Fest on June 16th. Bring a blanket and some snacks and listen to Americana music from Snider, Hayes Carll, Will Kimbrough and Elizabeth Cook.
6. The City Champs, Hi-Tone Cafe, June 16, 9 p.m. $7, 18 and up
Think of the City Champs as a three-man latter-day version of the MGs. They play instrumental soul and funk (and they also do an excellent cover of "A Beautiful Mine", aka the "Mad Men" theme music. If you like vintage Stax and Hi singles, you'll want to be at the Hi-Tone on the 16th.
7. Michael Jackson Immortal World Tour, FedExForum, June 20, 8 p.m., $50 - $250,
Alas, you'll never be able to see a real Michael Jackson in concert again, but this show might be the next best thing. The Michael Jackson Immortal World Tour is what happens when MJ's music and signature moves get combined with Cirque du Soleil.
8. Norah Jones, Mud Island Amphitheatre, June 22, 8 p.m., $48 - $60
Mud Island has hosted some pretty impressive bands this year, and their show on the 22nd is no exception. Jazzy chanteuse (and daughter of Ravi Shankar) Norah Jones will play the island's outdoor amphitheatre.
9. Andrew's Going Away Party, Hi-Tone Cafe, June 22, 9 p.m., free, 18 and up
I'm super sad that a going away party for Andrew McCalla (aka DJ Buck Wilders) is even necessary, but if there has to be one, at least it's going to be awesome. Buck Wilders and the Hook up, DJ John Hoppe (from Goner Records) and Naan Violence will play a free show that will hopefully be enough fun to distract us from the fact that we're losing a very talented guy.
10. Stax Celebration, Levitt Shell, June 30, 7 p.m., free
If you've never seen the kids from the Soulsville Academy perform, you're completely missing out. Fix that (or just see them again) when they play the final concert from their summer program at the Levitt Shell on June 30th.
