5 Things to Do in Memphis This Weekend: 6/8 - 6/10
5 Things to Do in Memphis This Weekend: 6/8 - 6/10
Happy Friday! Here's the shortlist of the events you won't want to miss this weekend:
1. FedEx St. Jude Classic, TPC-Southwind, Friday - Sunday, all day, $35 per day
Some of the world's best golfers (ahem, Rory McIlroy) are at Southwind this weekend for the annual FedEx St. Jude Classic. Catch the second round of tournament play on Friday, the third round on Saturday and the final round on Sunday. Proceeds from this PGA event benefit St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
2. Mama Mia!, Orpheum Theatre, Friday - Sunday, various times, $50 - $90
As far as theatre goes, "Mama Mia!" isn't exactly heavy stuff. It's the story of a girl, her mom, a wedding, and a Maury Povich-level paternity mishap, all set to the music of Swedish pop group Abba. It's sugary and fluffy and the costumes are a touch ridiculous, but it's a lot of fun. The touring Broadway production of the show is at the Orpheum through Sunday night.
3. Battle of Memphis Sesquicentennial, Mud Island River Park, Saturday and Sunday, all day, free
It's been 150 years since the (mostly uneventful) naval Battle of Memphis. During the anniversary weekend, Civil War historians, enthusiasts and lecturers will take over Mud Island for two days of performances, talks and a Confederate battlefield encampment packed with reenactors.
This weekend, watch Memphis' finest, the all-star Hustlin' Rollers, take on the Derby City Roller Girls from Louisville, Ky. The two teams are closely ranked, so the game is going to be intense. Stick around after the Hustlin' Rollers game to watch the PrissKilla Prezleys take on the Angels of Death. There will be beer and food from Uncle Lou's Fried Chicken available, and tickets are $10 in advance at Blues City Skates or Goner Records (and $6 for kids, free for kids 4 and under).
5. Mo Alexander Live, Buccaneer Lounge, Saturday, 9 p.m., $10
Memphis' hardest working comedian is returning home this weekend for a stand up show at the Buccaneer on Saturday night. Mo Alexander's R-rated commentary isn't for the easily offended, but it is hilarious. Saturday's show will be recorded for release as a CD, so be sure to laugh loud.
If none of these events are your thing, there are plenty more on the blog's calendar. There's also a bonus sixth thing to do on the I Love Memphis tumblr. No matter what you do this weekend, I hope you have a blast. Come back and tell me about it on Monday.
