365 Things to Do in Memphis #164: Drink the Water

I know that, if you're not from Memphis, this sounds a little lame, but I don't care. Memphis has the best tap water in the country, and assignment #164 in the 365 Things to Do in Memphis is to drink it.

aquifer

It's easy to forget how great our water is when you drink it every day. Usually, it hits me whenever I leave town and fill up a glass from a hotel room tap. When you're used to Memphis' super clean water, everything else just tastes kind of funny.

Here's why it's so good: Memphis water comes from a huge underground aquifer (not the Mississippi River, as a lot of visitors seem to think). When you turn your tap on to brush your teeth, the water that comes out is the same stuff that big companies bottle and sell in vending machines.

As a bonus, good water makes even better beer.

I am planning a trip from Kansas to Florida in November and will be stopping by Memphis. The more I read your posts, the more time I wish I could spend in Memphis.... and I will DEFINITELY try the water!

I live in St. Louis and we are spoiled with our water as well.  It's nice to know that when I go to Memphis, I cannot be afraid to drink the water.  I lived in Springfield, Missouri for several years and I felt the need to buy a filtration system for my water because it was not up to my normal standards... and it still wasn't as good as my St. Louis water.  Very excited to drink unfiltered water when I am there later this month!
