365 Things to Do in Memphis #146: See the Secret Sculpture Garden
There's a secret sculpture garden growing in Memphis, and assignment #146 in the 365 Things to Do in Memphis is to find it.
Earlier this year, artist Thomasin Durgin purchased an empty lot just south of North Parkway with the idea to fill it up with permanent and temporary works by local artists. She wanted to give her friends a place to show their work and create a cool space for neighborhood kids to hang out.
Once you're on the right street, the garden is easy to find - it fills an empty lot on a quiet street lined with older bungalows. It's got benches, sculptures, a no adults allowed painting wall, a fledgling garden and a hook-shaped stone path.
The Secret Sculpture Garden is a work in progress - Durgin is still looking for artists who want to install their work in the space and she's taking requests for projects from the kids who hang out there. (One project, a kid-sized fort dubbed the "Cool Shack", was concepted by a little boy who wanted a space devoted to both studying and dogs that also had saloon doors.)
