5 Things to Do in Memphis This Weekend: 1/20 - 1/22
Happy Friday, Memphis! Here's your weekly short list of this weekend's five can't-miss Memphis events:
1. Incognito Art Auction, Memphis Botanic Gardens, Friday, 6 p.m., $25 - $35
At the Botanic Gardens' Incognito art auction, you're invited to bid on the art you love, not the art by people you know. They're auctioning off works by 80 mid-south artists without telling you who made them at their gala tonight. Tickets include hors d'oeuvres, drink tickets, live music and a silent auction.
2. University of Memphis vs. SMU, FedExForum, Saturday, 12 p.m., various prices
Spend your Saturday morning with the Tigers as they take on SMU at the Forum. Now that they're in conference play, the team has had a series of really great, very close games lately. If you can't support the team on an empty stomach, the Majestic Grille is opening at 10 a.m. for brunch.
3. Sixth Birthday Bash, Flying Saucer Cordova, Saturday, 6 p.m., free
If you're rocking the suburbs this weekend, check out the Cordova Flying Saucer's sixth birthday party. There's going to be live music, an afternoon home brewing demo (at 2 p.m.) and six special beers will be tapped for the occasion. The party is 21 and up.
4. Die Fledermaus, Germantown Performing Arts Center, Saturday, 7:30 p.m., various prices
Opera Memphis is staging their opening performance of "Die Fledermaus" on Saturday night at GPAC. The opera is lighthearted and funny, and though it was originally written in German, Opera Memphis will perform it in English.
5. Billy Joe Shaver with John Paul Keith, Hi-Tone Cafe, Saturday, 9 p.m., $17 - $20
Billy Joe Shaver is an outlaw country singer from Texas. John Paul Keith is a Memphis-based rock'n'roller. The two are pairing up for what's going to be a very fun show at the Hi-Tone on Saturday night. If you're not sure about Shaver's country credentials, read up on his bio before the show. Tickets are $17 in advance and $20 at the door, and the show is 18 and up.
If none of these events are your thing, there are more on the blog's calendar. No matter what you do this weekend, have a great time.
