5 Things to Do in Memphis This Weekend: 1/13 - 1/15
Happy Friday, Memphis! Here's your weekly list of five great ways to spend this weekend:
1. Deering and Down Music Video Release Party, The Warehouse, Friday, 7 p.m., $5
Deering and Down are releasing their very first music video tonight at the Warehouse on G.E. Patterson. The video will screen at 8 p.m. and Deering and Down will play after. There's a cash donation bar.
2. Live From Memphis 11th Birthday Party, 1 S. Main St., Friday, 7 p.m., free
Memphis' favorite little music and culture website is growing up. Come celebrate Life from Memphis' 11th year at their offices tonight. The party is free, and DJ MC Griddle is playing. There will also be a photo booth and the giving of the annual WTF (Working Together for Memphis) award.
Memphis Roller Derby is doing something a little different for their season opener: they're mixing up teams and having a themed bout where brain-craving Zombies will skate against perky, hard-hitting cheerleaders. Tickets are $12 at the door, but you can get them for $10 in advance at Goner Records or Blues City Skates. Kids are $5, and kids under 5 get in free.
Noam Chomsky is speaking at the Mid-South Peace and Justice Center's annual Grassroots Gala on Saturday night. There's a seated banquet at 6 p.m. (that's the $50 ticket), but Mr. Chomsky will speak at 7 p.m. There will also be live music from the Bluff City Backsliders, dance performances, and a Global Goods pop-up shop. There will be free childcare available.
5. Our House, Mollie Fontaine Lounge, Saturday, 11 p.m., free
If you need to dance, Mollie Fontaine's is the place to do it this weekend. DJs Justin Hand and Brian Analog are spinning house music in the converted Victorian house. There's no cover and the party lasts until the bar closes, but you can't get in unless you're 21 or older.
If none of these events are your thing, there are more on the blog's calendar. No matter what you do this weekend, have a great time.
