5 Things to Do in Memphis This Weekend: 12/2 - 12/4
Happy Friday, Memphis! Here's your weekly shortlist of five great things to do around town this weekend:
1. Flicker Street: Found, Flicker St. Studio, Friday, 5:30 p.m., free
One of Memphis' coolest art institutions is having their first group exhibit tonight. The studio, which is located on Flicker St. (sort of behind the Board of Education) is a studio, gallery space and school (their are classes in everything from drawing to book making). Ten of Flicker St.'s artists will have their work on display tonight from 5:30 p.m. until 9 p.m.
Ballet Memphis is staging their annual production of the holiday classic for four nights at the Orpheum Theatre. It's going to be a fairly magical holiday experience – the choreography and costumes are original to Ballet Memphis, the sets are from the London City Ballet and the music will be plaedfrom the Memphis Syphony Orchestra.
3. St. Jude Memphis Marathon, downtown and midtown, Saturday, 8:30 a.m., free to watch
It's too late to sign up to run in the St. Jude Marathon (and half marathon) on Saturday, but it's never too late to cheer on those brave souls who are running 26.2 miles in December. Take a look at the race map, then park yourself somewhere along the way. Bring a boombox, play some tunes and cheer on the runners, especially those running as St. Jude Heroes (they've done fundraising for the children's research hospital).
4. Rock'n'Romp, 409 S. Main, Saturday, 2 p.m., free for kids, $5 for adults
The last Rock'n'Romp of 2011 is happening on Saturday in the huge event space at 409 S. Main St. Local bands Vending Machine, Star and Micey and Keia Johnson will play a family-friendly show, there will be some kind of arts and crafts, plenty of food, and beer for the adults. Remember, all adults at Rock'n'Romp must be accompanied by children.
Break out your Santa costume – the seventh annual Stumbling Santa Pub Crawl is happening downtown on Dec. 3rd. Join the band of Santas as they drink their way through downtown, starting at the Flying Saucer. The crawl is free, but the organizers will be collecting new toys for the kids at Porter-Leath.
If none of these events are your thing, you can always find more on the blog's calendar. No matter what you get into this weekend, I hope you have a great time.
