365 Memphians - Johnny

341 / 365

I know that Johnny here isn't human. He's clearly an adorable pit bull. I photographed him while he was perched on a barstool at the Lamplighter (which means that he's just as much a Memphian as the rest of us).

In other news:

- It's a bittersweet day for Memphis sports. Let's start with the bitter: Shane Battier is leaving Memphis and the Grizz for Miami. Alas. But! The University of Memphis named 35 year-old Justin Fuente as the new head football coach. Here's hoping that next season, we have two adorable, winning Tiger coaches to celebrate.

- Happy birthday to Memphis rockabilly Scotty Moore. Moore, who turns 80 this month, was one of the members of Elvis' backing band duing the Sun Studio days.

- The Huffington Post has a list-y piece on food trends that will be big in 2012. If they're to be believed, food trucks are almost over (just as Memphis is getting them). However, Memphis restaurants ahead of the curve on a few others, like fried chicken skin (hello, Gus's), mismatched dishes and fast/casual Asian (Mosa, Tao Too).

- What was that? You wanted to see video of Al Kapone singing "Whoop That Trick" with the Memphis Symphony Orchestra? Oh, ok. Here you go:

THIS!!! This is why Memphis is different than SO MANY other cities in the WORLD. AL Kapone and Memphis Symphony...regardless of if you like rap or classical...the fusion of art is VERY cool.
