Made in Memphis: The Kreature Comforts Guide
Made in Memphis: The Kreature Comforts Guide
Memphis has been written up in all sorts of travel guides, but there's only one designed specifically for lowlifes.
The Kreature Comforts Guide to Memphis (put out by Shangri-la Projects) is an informative, funny, down and dirty guide to all of the things that make Memphis great.
If you're the sort of person who prefers to stay on the well-trod path, Kreature Comforts probably isn't the guide book for you. However, if you're the kind of person who likes a little adventure and isn't afraid of immersive cultural experiences, you need a copy.
The 40-page guide is packed with information about Memphis' musical history (and the best places to find current Memphis music), free things to do and recommendations for getting around town. There are sections on Big Star, barbecue, sitting in with the band, transportation and a brutally honest assessment of our civic mindset ("Whether it's the river or the humidity, something gives the folks around here a 'I'll get it done tomorrow' or 'I'll quit drinking next week' attitude").
I've had my copy since about 2007, which makes it slightly out of date, but still pretty useful (historical locations don't generally move).
You can pick up your own copy from Shangri-la or Goner Records.

Has it been updated since 2007? There's a ton of outdated info in the version I have--would love a new one!
