On This Date, Something Happened: the Civil War Capitol
This year marks the 150th anniversary of the Civil War, so it's only appropriate that this week's historical marker sits at one of Memphis' Civil War sites.
"After the fall of Nashville, Governor Isham Harris convened the Tennessee legislature on this site February 20 - March 20, 1892. The state archives were also stored here."
This marker commemorates the brief month during the war when the Tennessee state capitol was moved to the corner of Madison and Second St. in Memphis.
The marker seems like a bit of an afterthought. It's text is simple, and frankly, kind of bland. The marker is hiding behind a pole, pressed up against a building, as though whoever placed it understood that it wasn't much and wanted to keep it out of the way.
But I notice you, little marker. And you should, too, even if it's just to celebrate the brief moment that Memphis could claim the state capitol title.
