Memphis Mystery Train Set List: Sept. 15, 2011
Today's edition of the Memphis Mystery Train was possibly the most fun I've ever had on the radio.
Here's why:
1. I not only played a Beyonce cover, but I managed to work R. Kelly's classic "Sex in the Kitchen" into the mix.
2. The Shondes from Brooklyn, New York came into the studio, fresh off of their show at the Hi-Tone. They talked about Memphis, Brooklyn, and their brand new record, "Searchlights", which comes out later this month.
3. I convinced Fury from the Shondes to read my all-time favorite PSA (helper monkeys) on air.
Here's what I played on this week's show, with the local tracks marked with an asterisk:
Pixies - This Monkey's Gone to Heaven
The Egyptians - The Party Stomp
Marie Knight - Hey Tell Me Boy
New Pornographers - Sing Me Spanish Techno
Paul Simon - Mother and Child Reunion
Yo La Tengo - Emulsified
Hold Steady - Your Little Hoodrat Friend
Elvis Costello - Radio Sweetheart
The Clash - Brand New Cadillac
*Amy LaVere - You Can't Keep Me
MGMT - Kids
June Brides - Every Conversation
Pomplamoose - Single Ladies (Beyonce cover)
Holly Golightly and the Brokeoffs - No Help Coming
Belle and Sebastian - I'm a Cuckoo
France Gall - Poupee de Cire Poupee de Son
Shondes - Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow
Neutral Milk Hotel - In the Aeroplane Over the Sea
Bikini Kill - I Wish I Was Him
Gino Washington - I'll Be Around When You Want Me
Those Darlins - DUI or Die
R. Kelly - Sex in the Kitchen
*Little Junior's Blue Flame - When It Rains, It Really Pours
*Charles "Packy" Axton - Holiday Cheer
Ted Leo and the Pharmacists - Where Was My Brain
The Ramones - Sheena is a Punk Rocker
Wanda Jackson - My Big Iron Skillet
Detroit Cobras - Everybody's Going Wild
*Jack Oblivian - Rat City
The Strokes - Under Cover of Darkness
Del Shannon - Runaway
Lou Barlow - Caterpillar Girl
Bobby Fuller Four - Let Her Dance
*Cory Branan - Wayward and Down
Thanks again to the Shondes for getting up early and coming on the show this morning. You guys were incredibly lovely, and I can't wait to see you again.
If you missed today's show, it will re-air tomorrow afternoon at 2 p.m. on WEVL 89.9 FM in Memphis or wevl.org.

You're pretty much the coolest person I know. That Pomplamoose song made my day.
