When she's not working in Sales and Marketing Communications at FedEx, you'll most likely find Lauren Oxner with a plate full of pancakes. She's so enamored with them that she started Pancake Palate, a blog devoted to all things pancake. She told me that she loves their simplicity and nostalgia (she also loves them topped with bananas).
In other news:
- Happy first day of football season! The University of Memphis Tigers are playing Mississippi State at the Liberty Bowl tonight at 7 p.m. If you can't make it, the game will be televised on Fox Sports Network. If you can make it, I recommend parking at the Children's Museum of Memphis - it's super close to the stadium and all of the proceeds go to support the museum's programs.
- If basketball is more what you're after, the Grizzlies are having a block party in Overton Park tonight. It's free, and there will be pizza, airbrush tattoo artists, games and more. It starts at 5 p.m.
- Maybe it's the barbecue, or the extreme sports fandom or the very real DIY ethic that we have when it comes to doing just about anything, but Memphis was named the fourth manliest city in the U.S. We lost to Charlotte, N.C.; Oklahoma City; Columbia, S.C.; and Nashville, which placed first (apparently, the fact that they have trucks, rodeos and fixing up their houses negates all of the sequins and glitter on Music Row).
- The Speak Up for Overton Park team has released the results of their first survey on what people like, don't like, and wish would happen at Overton Park. Check out the results.
