365 Memphians - Doug Carpenter
Doug Carpenter isn't a native Memphian, but he's proud to be a Memphian by choice (and encouraging others to be proud to choose Memphis as their home).  When he isn't busy running his advertising and public relations agency, Doug Carpenter and Associates, he spends his time working on the Memphis Egotist, a site for showcasing the work of local creatives. In other news: - Happy first day of school, University of Memphis students! Happy first full week of school to those of you at Rhodes, Christian Brothers and Memphis College of Art. - Today is the last day to sign up for Memphis Park(ing) Day. Park(ing) Day, which is on Sept. 16th,  is a worldwide event where people transform metered parking spots into miniature public parks for one day. If you and your friends are interested in taking part, email a written description of how you would use your parking space to [email protected] by 5 p.m. today. Sketches are encouraged, but not required. - Visitors can't get enough of Gus's fried chicken. The fried chicken emporium  was mentioned in a Wall Street Journal article about "remote cult restaurants". The article is awesome attention for a Memphis favorite, but as food writer Jennifer Biggs points out, does Gus's still count as a hole-in-the-wall when the WSJ takes notice? - If you haven't taken a few minutes to check out Free Sol's new video for their song "Hoodies On, Hats Low", find a few minutes to do so. The beautifully shot video features downtown Memphis and stars Justin Timberlake.
