Urban Farms Extends Hours, MRD Wants You to Play Dodgeball and It's Time to Clean Your Pantry

365 Memphians - Julie

Julie is the first non-human to be featured as one of the 365 Memphians, but I think she counts. She's a lifelong Memphian (she was born and raised at the Memphis Zoo), and at 50 years old, she's the second-oldest hippopotamus in captivity. She likes lurking in her pool and chomping watermelons.

In other news: - The Urban Farms just announced that they're going to extend their hours and be open more days during the week. They'll now be open Tuesday - Thursday from 1 p.m. - 6 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. The store is located at Tillman and Sam Cooper, and they've got fresh, local produce, homemade Italian ice, coffee and basic groceries. - Speaking of groceries, it's time to clean out your pantries. The Mid-South Food Bank is hurting for donations of money, canned and non-perishable food and personal care items (cleaning products, deodorant, paper plates). - If you can dodge traffic, you can dodge a ball. Memphis Roller Derby is having their first ever dodgeball tournament on Saturday, July 30th at the fairgrounds. If you want to play, assemble a group of 6 -10 people (18 and over, please) and pick up a packet at Saturday night's bout or request one by email. It's $50 per team to play, and there will be fabulous prizes.

I love that hippo! I was born in 1972 and have visited her for many years. She is a beauty.
