Memphis on IFC, a Downtown Recycling Survey and an Opportunity to Relive Recess

365 Memphians - Jon Burchfield

Jon Burchfield is an anthropologist by training, but right now, he's working on the Indie Memphis Film Festival. He's been screening films, wrangling the rest of us that are screening films and doing a lot of the festival planning. He grew up in Itta Bena, Miss., but has been in Memphis more than long enough to count as a local.

In other news: - Back in December, IFC came to Memphis to film an episode of their new travel show, "Young, Broke and Beautiful". The show features locals (in our case, myself, Alex Warble, Lamar Sorrento, Tad Pierson and a few others) showing the host, Stuart, around to favorite locals-only hang outs. The Memphis episode aired last Friday, but if you missed it, you can get it on iTunes or catch reruns on IFC all week. - If you applied to be the Peabody's new assistant Duckmaster, I hope your resume was special. More than 100 people have applied for the job wrangling the hotel's signature mallards. - Memphis City Gardens - the group that's providing garden space for downtown residents at Central Station - is doing research about recycling downtown. Help them out by taking their survey. - Attention, those of of you who miss recess - Memphis Roller Derby still has team openings for their first-ever dodge ball tournament on Saturday, July 30. It's $50 for a team of 6 - 10 people, and all of the cash goes to helping the league (which is a non-profit). The tournament is double-elimination, so you'll get to play twice, no matter what. To sign up, email the league.

If you have Comcast OnDemand you can watch the Memphis episode of "Young, Broke, and Beautiful" anytime. I really enjoyed the show and discovered some places that I had never been to. I can't wait to check out the Crystal Grotto!
