Memphis Mystery Train Set List: July 14 (Jody Stephens Edition)
Memphis Mystery Train Set List: July 14 (Jody Stephens Edition)
I had a super special guest on today's Mystery Train, so I turned the lights on, kept my shoes on my feet and was generally on my best behavior this morning.
Jody Stephens, the drummer for legendary Memphis-based power pop band Big Star, came to the studio this morning with a copy of the live recording of the last ever Big Star show (last May at the Levitt Shell).
Jody is easily one of my favorite Memphians. He's friendly and funny, and when I started playing his record - which, in my defense, looked like a 45 - at 33 1/3, he laughed and told me that perfection was boring. (Note that he's also super tall - I had on three inch heels today.)
But before Jody stopped by, there was plenty of rock'n'roll. Here's what I played on this morning's show, with the local tracks noted with an asterisk:
Old 97’s - Crash on the Barrelhead
The Egyptians - The Party Stomp
France Gall - Poupee du Cire
Detroit Cobras - Funnel of Love
The Crookes - Backstreet Lovers
Cake - Short Skirt, Long Jacket (demo version)
Okkervil River - O Dana (Big Star cover)
Dolly Parton - Don’t Drop Out
The Four Seasons - Can’t Take My Eyes Off of You
*Mouserocket - I’ve Seen You Before
Pixies - Gigantic
Arrah and the Ferns - Liar Liar
Young Fresh Fellows - Taco Wagon
Calexico - Alone Again Or
Those Darlins - Who’s That Knockin’ At My Window

Jonathan Richman - Everyday Clothes
Eileen - These Boots Are Made for Walkin’
*Sam the Sham and the Pharoahs - Ain’t Gonna Move
*Otis Redding - Shake
Thao - Good Bye Good Luck
*Johnny Cash - Ballad of a Teenage Queen
Why - Crushed Bones
They Might Be Giants - Twisting
*Luv Clowns - Good People Sometimes Do Bad Things
New Pornographers - Crash Years
Belle and Sebastian - My Wandering Days Are Over
Frightened Rabbit - Living in Color
The Gories - Nitroglycerine
Camaros - Too Damn Picky
