Meet Memphian no. 208, See Footloose Early, Get on Board and Vote Before It's Too Late
Memphian no. 208 is a pretty fascinating lady. Though she was originally from the north, Jan Meyer visited her family in Memphis often as a kid. She loved it so much that she told her parents that she was "going to live in Memphis for the rest of her life." She taught 9th grade English at White Station High School, raised three boys and spent years as a professional and artistic photographer. These days, she lives in East Memphis, reads a lot (currently, Patti Smith's "Just Kids"), loves art and visits with her family. Fun fact: Mrs. Meyer still has every piece of clothing she's ever owned.
In other news:
- There's going to be a special, surprise advance screening of Craig Brewer's remake of "Footloose" tomorrow night at 8 p.m. If you want to go, you have to buy your ticket at Spin Street (Poplar and Highland) tomorrow between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. The theater location will be on the ticket, and only the first 350 people will get in.
- If you haven't voted in the annual Best of Memphis poll, you'd best get on that - voting closes on Friday night. And if you're feeling kind (and really like this site), vote for I Love Memphis in the best blog and best Twitter account categories. Though, know that if I lose best Twitter to Tony Allen, I'm totally fine with that.
- You know that proverbial "They" that makes all of the decisions in the city? You can be one of them. On Friday night at 6 p.m. at the MPACT Memphis headquarters on South Main, you can apply for the more than 90 open positions on Memphis' volunteer boards. The boards govern everything from land use to city beautification, transportation, public grievances and more.
- If you're a big fan of knowing the current local temporal conditions, check out Jen's surprisingly thorough tribute to JAM-JAM1, Memphis' only hotline for time, temperature and Captain D's ads.
