Meet Memphian No. 202: Melissa Wolowicz

365 Memphians - Melissa Wolowicz
Meet Memphian no. 202 (of 365), Melissa Wolowicz. Melissa is a philanthropist, mom, chicken farmer and all-around great lady. Here, she answers my questions about cupcakes, chickens and how anyone can be a philanthropist for cheap: Name: Melissa Wolowicz Occupation: Vice President of Grants & Initiatives, Community Foundation of Greater Memphis Hometown: Memphis, Tenn. Neighborhood: Evergreen in Midtown What’s up with the chickens? We are happy to be part of a growing number of families raising backyard chickens. There is nothing better than fresh eggs and the girls provide hours of entertainment. Right now, the “Midtown Chicks” are doing their best to stay cool. Their preferred methods: cold watermelon and dirt baths. You can check out their adventures on my blog, Midtown Chicks. I’m working on: recruiting new members for GiVE 365, a program that we (the Community Foundation of Greater Memphis) launched last June. Each of us (per household) gives $365 and together we invest in exciting projects in Memphis. Our goal is to get 200 new members by Aug. 31*. I believe in: supporting local farmers, artists, restaurants and non-profits. The best thing about raising a kid in Memphis is: being within walking distance of Snowden School and Overton Park. The Park is brimming with places to visit: the Old Forest, Brooks Museum, Memphis College of Art, Levitt Shell and the Zoo. The world needs more: compassion and humor. GiGi’s Cupcakes or Muddy’s Cupcakes? Muddy’s, hands down. I am a fan of the New Yorker, the Pucker Up and all of their berry pies. I also love BFF Cupcakes. The cupcakes are delicious and the owner, Jennifer, delivers them to you in a pink Jeep. She is a cupcake rock star. Summer in Memphis is perfect for: air conditioning and movies. My family loves the summer movie series at the Orpheum and we are really digging the Indie Memphis Concert Film Series at the Levitt Shell. The last thing I made was: paletas for a friend’s birthday. The strawberry/lime pops were yummy. I love Memphis because: I am surrounded by people that want to volunteer, make a difference and help each other. We are a tight-knit community of people that looks out for one another and wants to make Memphis an even better place to live.  It’s so easy to get involved and make a difference in this community. *If you'd like to get involved in Give 365, there's a cocktail mixer tonight (July 21) at East Tapas and Drinks at 5:30 p.m. If you've got any questions, email Melissa.
