CMYK Smashes Music and Art Together, Comes Up With Fun
In Memphis, CMYK is more than the abbreviation for the colors in your printer's toner cartridge.
It's a brand new monthly explosion of creativity that combines the visual experience of an art gallery with the energy and fun of a rock'n'roll show.
Probably because that's exactky what it is. At last Thursday's inaugural CMYK, two bands (Memphis-based Cheyenne Mars and Sudden Organs and touring act Pepper Rabbit) bookended a performance by Memphis rapper Royal T while artist Kyle Taylor did a live painting of a leaping tiger with a can of spray paint in his mouth.
In the other room, people wearing 3-D glasses watched a film by Charlie Blacksmoke (aka artist Adam LaClave) that was projected onto a wall. Others checked out a framed set of Flaming Lips concert posters that were on loan to the event from the band's lead singer, Wayne Coyne.
There was a lot to see (and hear), but the organizers spread the action through the Hi-Tone's three rooms to prevent sensory overload. The diverse crowd was impressively large for a Thursday night show by a smaller band.
Sidenote - Going to hear a band you've never heard of can be risky, but the CMKY crew deserves all kinds of applause for picking such good bands. It seems like they went into the show with the mindset of curators rather than concert promoters, and it paid off.
CMYK 2 is set for Thursday, July 21st at the Hi-Tone Cafe. So far, Delicate Steve is the only band on the bill, but more will be announced soon. The cover is $5 in advance and $7 at the door.
