5 Things to Do in Memphis This Weekend - 7/29 - 7/31
5 Things to Do in Memphis This Weekend - 7/29 - 7/31
Happy Friday, Memphis! There are only a few weekends left before back-to-school time (which, even as an adult, seems to be when we're supposed to get more serious about everything). Make the most of the next 48 hours with these five weekend events:
1. Trolley Tour, South Main Arts District, Friday, 6 p.m. - 9 p.m., free
Trolley tour happens every month, but tonight's is going to be pretty special. Get there early for the cook-off next to Harry's Detour, then make your way to MPACT for the ArtsMemphis orange-out, the "This is Memphis" photo exhibit, and the city's Get on Board volunteer board sign up event (where I'm the DJ). Then, check out the shops and galleries and take a free ride on the trolley.
2. Black Lodge Presents: Tennessee Tease Invades the Cult Movie, Evergreen Theatre, Friday - Sunday, 9 p.m., $12
The guys at Black Lodge Video are teaming up with the lovely ladies of the Tennessee Tease burlesque troupe for an evening of cult movie-inspired performances. The three-night show is in a theater, so you'll be able to see no matter where you sit. It's BYOB, but beer and wine will be sold for donations.
3. Gustafer Yellowgold (all ages show), Hi-Tone Cafe, Saturday, 2 p.m., $5 - $10
Gustafter Yellowgold is a children's character, but don't expect it this show at the Hi-Tone to be boring for adults. It's going to be kid-friendly along the lines of "Yo Gabba Gabba" rather than "Barney and Friends". The show starts at 2 p.m. and is $5 for kids and $10 for adults.
4. 4th Annual Orange Mound Block Party, Melrose Park, Saturday, 2 p.m. - 8 p.m., free
The Orange Mound community is having a big block party this weekend at Melrose Park. It lasts from 2 p.m. - 8 p.m. on Saturday. There will be live music and vendors, and an after party and video shoot at Elements Ultra Lounge.
5. Bob Dylan with Leon Russell, Mud Island Amphitheatre, Saturday, 8 p.m., $39.50 - $69.50
Here's your chance to see a music legend in at a fairly intimate venue: Bob Dylan is playing at the outdoor amphiteatre on Mud Island on Saturday night with Leon Russell. By 8 p.m., the weather should be fairly nice, and the views of downtown and the Mississippi River will be excellent. Tickets are still available, and you can get them by calling (800) 745-3000.
If none of these events are your thing, you can find plenty more on the calendar. If you're coming to trolley tour, stop by MPACT and say hi - I'll be the one behind the laptop, playing the rock'n'roll. No matter what you do this weekend, I hope you have a great one.
