5 Things to Do in Memphis This Weekend: 7/1 - 7/3

Happy Fourth of July weekend, Memphis! There are a ton of things going on around town this weekend, many of them involving fireworks. Take a break from your busy barbecue and pool party schedule and check out one of these weekend events: 1. Hustle and Flow, Orpheum Theatre, Friday, 7:15 p.m., $7 This year, the Orpheum is adding a Memphis Film Festival to their annual summer movie series. They're showing different Memphis-themed and made-in-Memphis movies for the month of July, starting with tonight's screening of Craig Brewer's Hustle and Flow. The writer / director will be on hand to discuss the film, and after the movie, you can take your ticket to B.B. King's for free cover. 2. Go Team America Burlesque Show, Newby's, Friday, 8 p.m., $10 In the grand tradition of USO shows to boost soldiers' morale, the lovely ladies of the Tennessee Tease Burlesque troupe are putting on a patriotic show this weekend. There will be live music from Black Max, the Sin City Scoundrels and the Bluff City Backsliders as well as plenty of gorgeous girls doing classic burlesque acts. 3. Real Housewives of Memphis art show and sale, Odessa, Saturday, 10 a.m. - 8 p.m., free Some of the city's most talented emerging female artists are having a show and sale at Odessa on Saturday. Paintings, photography and multimedia works will be for sale, and Fille Catatonique (everyone's favorite accordian-toting Creole chanteuse) will do an acapella and spoken word set. Salon Sounds will also play. 4. Cycle Memphis First Ride, Cooper-Young Gazebo, Saturday, 8 p.m., free Cycle Memphis is a brand new monthly bike ride, and they're having their inaugural trip on Saturday night. The medium-paced ride will leave from the gazebo in Cooper-Young at 8 p.m. and last until about 11 p.m. Bikes with sound systems and lights are encouraged, bad attitudes are not. 5. Go see some fireworks, all over town, Saturday - Monday, after dark, free It's Fourth of July weekend, and you need to celebrate our country's independence by watching things explode. You've got options - there are at least 10 fireworks-related events happening all over Memphis (and in the 'burbs) all weekend long. Check this list for the ones closest to you. As always, if none of these events are your thing, there are plenty more on the calendar. No matter what you do this weekend, I hope you have a really great time. If you've got a three-day weekend, have an extra-great time.
