Meet Memphian No. 174, Will Phillips, Jr.
Will Phillips and I have been Twitter friends for a long time, but I didn't meet him in person until the I Love Memphis mural launch party in May. For the record, he's just as friendly in real life as he is over the internet. Here, he answers my questions about his hometown (New Orleans), the weather and the coolest people he's met in Memphis:
Name: Will Phillips, Jr.
Occupation: Freelance Graphic Artist / Web Designer / Video Editor - See what I do at sleekdesignstudio.com
Hometown: New Orleans, La.
Neighborhood: Live in Bartlett. Work downtown.
I’m excited about: The redbirds are back in action, You just can't go wrong with a warm afternoon at Autozone Park. And can't wait to see what the Grizz do next year. I'm sure it will be good.
The strangest thing that’s happened to me in Memphis is: the weather. Only in Memphis can it be cold and rainy, and warm and sunny, in the same day - the same afternoon sometimes.
Memphis is special because: I can claim it as my stomping grounds. That's what it is and will always be - friends and memories. Of course, it's still an open book.
If I could spend the night anywhere in Memphis, it would be: on the river, out in the open, under the stars.
The coolest person I’ve met in Memphis is: Larry Dodson, and Larry Dodson, Jr. of the Barkays. They are some pretty cool guys. I got to help them with a charity project they did for Haiti once. I think it's awesome that they're doing Sunset Symphony this year.
The thing I miss most about home is: the food, especially the seafood. I may be biased, but NOLA has got to be the best place to eat in the world.
The most misunderstood thing about Memphis is: that the only things that exist here are music and barbecue - Memphis has way more to offer.
I’m working on: a bazillion things: A brochure for the Memphis & Shelby County Music Commission, helping edit a local feature film and another short film, poster art for the 2012 OL:M Intl' Film Fest, a website for some local musicians, the seasonal newsletter for the UT Hamilton Eye Institute... I could go on.
I love Memphis because: it's just right. Not to big, not to small, down to earth, great culture, rich history. I think it's great when I can tell folks, "Yeah, I'm from Memphis."
