Meet Memphian #158: Irwin Magevney
Meet Memphian #158, Irwin Magevney. She was photographed outside of the Magevney House downtown, just a few blocks away from where she works as an attorney. Here, she answers my questions about her life in Memphis:
Name: Irwin Magevney
Occupation: Attorney
Hometown: Memphis, TN
Neighborhood: East Memphis
My favorite Memphis basketball player is: Elliot Perry. As a child he was the only player I could identify because he wore goggles on the court. Now, I really respect him for all he has given back to the community he came from.
I’m excited about: running with the kids from Youth Villages in the Zoom through the Zoo. The kids are so excited about going to the zoo its infectious!
The best thing to do on a hot Memphis night is: grill with friends! Grab some fresh veggies from the Farmer’s Market and good meats from Charlie’s Meat Market mix in your beverage of choice and the Memphis heat will be much more tolerable.
It’s a typical workday. I’m: helping an injured client in some capacity. I may be on the phone or drafting something in my office or I might be in court. I love that my job is different everyday, and I regularly get to interact with all different types of people.
The best concert I’ve gone to in Memphis is: either Tom Petty in August of 1999 or Journey in July of 2009
My favorite local watering hole is: It definitely was The Green Beetle (hoping it will re-open soon), but currently I really like Local and Bar None.
I’m planning on: taking advantage of the nice weather before it gets to hot by running on the Greenline and in Shelby Farms.
Memphis is interesting because: there is so much going on. Growing up here I never realized all Memphis has to offer and how many interesting and unique people reside here.
If I had to pick one thing (or event or person) to describe Memphis to someone, it would be: the St. Jude Memphis Marathon Weekend, so many people and entities come together to put on a world-class race for an amazing cause.
I love Memphis because: Memphis is home for me and the people are so incredibly friendly if you just stop for a moment to say hello.

Kerry, is Ms. Magevney a descendent of the folks who built the house? Or was that just a nice place to take her picture? (Hope this is not an ignorant question, but it wasn't clear from the interview.)

William- I am a descendent of the Mageveny family of the Magevney House. The House was Eugene Magevney's and his brother was Michael Magevney. I am a direct descendent of Michael Magevney.

Irwin. Can you confirm Michael married an Ellen Rebecca Murphy? Lineage book,Vol.8,by Daughters of the American Revolution, says he did but I cannot find further information to back it up. I am researching into J.J.Murphy - father of Ellen - of Memphis.
