A Downtown Duel Results in a Draw

There was a duel at high noon in Court Square today. The weapon of choice, paint brushes dipped in black ink. The participants, local artists. Ink Off! At Court Square, Memphis, Tenn. Today's Ink Off drawing competition was between Gino Barzizza and Lauren Holterman. They spent an hour attacking a giant piece of brown paper with drawings of banjo-playing geezers, Venus fly traps and smiling, winged faces. Workers on their way to lunch stopped and started. The Beale Street Flippers flipped. There were free balloons. The Ink Off was put on by Live From Memphis and the Rozelle Artists Guild as part of Downtown Alive, a weekly Thursday lunch time street performance series that happens every summer in Court Square. Gino Barzizza at Court Square When I stopped by (about halfway through), no one seemed to be winning the art battle. Judging by the results I found on Facebook, no one did - Gino and Lauren were declared co-champions. That's fine with me - everybody wins when there's live art and free balloons.

This is a stellar form of urban artistry, literally taking all of North America by storm; various locales, myriad genres. One such that is interesting to follow is on twitter @artbattleto ... Memphis is getting her swagger back to such a degree, even in the smallest of ways, it is becomimg hard to stay humble. lp
