5 Things to Do in Memphis This Weekend: 6/24 - 6/26
Happy Friday, Memphis! It's the official first weekend of summer, and there's plenty to do. Here's my list of the top five things happening around town this weekend:
1. Stomp!, Orpheum Theatre, Friday and Saturday, 8 p.m., $20 - $50
Stomp - the fun, loud percussion concert that involves everything from trash cans to matchboxes - is playing three shows at the Orpheum this weekend. It's a family friendly show (especially during the Saturday matinee), and tickets start at $20.
2. Party for the Cure, Rehab Disco, Friday, 9 p.m., $7
Rehab Disco is throwing a special party to raise money for breast cancer research tonight. Three DJs - MatthewEss, Scotty B. and Yo!Santos - will play dance music, and all of the money raised will go to Ashley Davis and Angela Ladner, who are participating in a 3-day, 60-mile walk Susan G. Komen Walk for the Cure.
3. 2011 Youth Playwrights Winners Showcase, Hattiloo Theatre, Saturday, 7 p.m., $5
The winners of the Hattiloo Theatre Young Playwrights competition will debut their plays at the downtown theater on Saturday night. For $5, you can see both shows - "In Love...With a Dead Man" by Jeromy Clear and "And You Know It" by Theo Pat.
4. Steve Miller Band, Memphis Botanic Gardens, Saturday, 8:30, $44
The Steve Miller band is playing an outdoor show at the Memphis Botanic Gardens on Saturday as part of the annual Live at the Garden Concert series. All of the table seating is sold out, but there are plenty of spots on the lawn. You're allowed to bring your own picnic, wine and lawn chairs. The gates open at 6:30, so get there early to get a good seat.
5. House of Mews Benefit Show, Hi-Tone Cafe, Sunday, 9 p.m., $5
The Hi-Tone is throwing a benefit show on Sunday for the House of Mews, a no-kill cat shelter and adoption agency in Cooper-Young. Five dollars gets you five bands - Silver Seeds, Wampa, Imagination Head, Near Reaches, and Richard James and the Special Riders.
If none of these events are your thing, you can always find more on the calendar. No matter what you do, have a great time, and take plenty of pictures.
