On This Date, Something Happened (Or, Didn't Happen)
Historically speaking, a lot has happened in Memphis. But, as much as the city is steeped in the past, there are a few spots around town that haven't really seen any major action. Rock'n'roll wasn't made, no civic plans were laid, and no one famous ever slept there.
Yesterday afternoon, I found possibly the greatest historical marker in town while I was walking down Front St.
It reads "On this site in 1897, nothing happened".
Mind you, it's not an official marker celebrating the uneventful, but I love that someone has screwed it into the brick on a street where so much has happened (Front St. was the center of cotton trading in Memphis).

Seems from where I sit that it says, "On this SITE in 1897, nothing happened", which is even more astounding.

I lived in a very small farm town in Iowa for a few years, way back when. One of the buildings on the town square had one of these signs on its face.
Come to think of it, didn't a sign like this appear in a Vonnegut novel? Maybe "Breakfast of Champions"?
