Meet Memphian #139: Scott Bomar
Meet Memphian #139: Scott Bomar
Everybody, meet Scott Bomar, local musician, producer and film composer. He's also the owner of downtown's Electrophonic Recording. Here, he tells me about his new record with the Bo-Keys, the coolest projects he's worked on and his undying love of Memphis basketball:
Name: Scott Bomar
Occupation: music producer, recording engineer and bassist in The Bo-Keys
Hometown: Memphis
Neighborhood: I live in Humes Heights and my studio is on South Main.
Right now, I’m working on: recovering from the Grizzlies’ loss in Game 7 of the NBA Playoffs and getting everything set up for the shows our band has booked this summer.
My new record is: The Bo-Keys “Got to Get Back !”
If I could only eat at one Memphis restaurant for a month, it would be: The Little Tea Shop downtown on Monroe.
My five favorite made-in-Memphis records are:
1. Booker T & the MGs “Soul Dressing”
2. Al Green “Greatest Hits”
3. Bobby Wommack “Fly Me to the Moon”
4. Isaac Hayes “Three Tough Guys Original Score”
5. Everything Jack Oblivian does
The coolest thing I’ve worked on is: That is a hard one to answer. It's a three way tie between Hustle & Flow, Cyndi Lauper’s “Memphis Blues” and the two Al Green records I was blessed to be a part of with the late, great Willie Mitchell.
I’m excited about: The Grizzlies and Memphis Tigers 2011-2012 seasons, our new record coming out on June 21st and our upcoming shows including our release party at the Levitt Shell on June 18th.
My favorite annual Memphis event is: It's difficult to name just one. Staxtacular, the annual Memphis Grizzlies benefit for the Stax Music Academy, Memphis Madness, the Bluff City Classic games in the summer and Gonerfest are all things I look forward to each year.
The most misunderstood thing about Memphis is: the expectation that musicians and artists here should do things for cheap or free.
The perfect Memphis weekend involves: This past weekend was pretty spectacular: Went to the Memphis in May BBQ contest and the next night went to game 6 of the NBA playoffs which the Grizzlies won.
My favorite song about Memphis is: “Memphis Train” by Rufus Thomas
I love Memphis because: of the people, the music, the food and basketball.
