365 Memphians, Day 128: Mother's Day Edition

365 Memphians - Kim Crawford
It's only fitting to celebrate Mother's day by featuring my mom as today's Memphian. So, everybody, meet my mom, Kim Crawford. In addition to being the best mom ever, she's an accountant, glass artist and a huge University of Memphis fan (she has lucky game day earrings).

Generally speaking, I can't go more than a few hours without wedging Maya Angelou into whatever discussion I'm in the midst of; Mother's Day is no exception. One of Dr. Angelou's finest poems is entitled, "Mother: A Cradle to Hold Me"... Its truly exceptional, following the perceptions of a newborn through adulthood / and the dynamic between a mother and her child. I'll only provide the first few stanzas... hopefully to whet your appetite / prompting you to acquire the poem yourself. Also, please realize that this isn't just to "bio-moms"; no, your 'mother' is whomever raised you; and if that is indeed the case with anyone reading this, prepare for a double-whammy... ( FYI: e v e r y d a y should be Mother's Day! ) It is true I was created in you. It is also true That you were created for me. I owned your voice. It was shaped and tuned to soothe me. Your arms were molded Into a cradle to hold me, to rock me. The scent of your body was in the air Perfumed for me to breathe. Mother, During those early, dearest days I did not dream that you had A larger life which included me, Among your other concerns, For I had a life Which was only you... lp
