5 Things to Do in Memphis This Weekend: 4/1 - 4/3
Happy April Fools day Friday, everybody. The Flyer may be claiming that Elvis is still alive, and YouTube may have reverted to 1911, but the top five things to do in Memphis this weekend are no joke:
1. You Are Here: a Group Exhibition, Odessa, Friday, 8 p.m., free
Six of Memphis' most promising young artists are displaying their work in a group exhibition for one night only at Odessa on Broad Ave. Check out sculpture by Elisha Gold, photography by Tommy Kha, as well as works by Holly Cole, James Inscho, and David Johnson.
2. Backyard Bash, Memphis Botanic Garden, Friday, 6 p.m., $30 per family
Bring your family to the Backyard Bash at the Botanic Garden tonight. It's going to happen in the My Big Backyard area, and there will be games, snacks, music by the Friendzies and plenty of time (and space) to play. Admission to the two-hour event is $20 per family for members and $30 per family for non-members.
3. Grey Gardens, Circuit Playhouse, Friday - April 17, 8 p.m., $38
Albert and David Maysles' 1975 documentary about a mother and daughter (with the same first name) living in squalor in the Hamptons has become a cult favorite. The movie version is weird, at times funny, and a little bit heartbreaking, but it's impossible to look away. Circuit Playhouse is staging the musical version of Grey Gardens through April 17th, turbans, singing and all.
4. Tour de Griz, Memphis Zoo, Saturday, 5:30 p.m., $25 - $45
Feel the wind in your playoff beard at this weekend's Tour de Griz. The bike ride from the Memphis Zoo ends at the FedExForum for the game between the Grizzlies' vs. the Timberwolves. The cost of the ticket includes admission to the zoo for the afternoon before the ride, a round-trip bike ride downtown (escorted by the MPD), valet bike parking at the Zoo and the Forum and a ticket to the game.
5. Found Footage Festival, Young Ave. Deli, Saturday, 8 p.m., $10
After a sold-out show at Studio on the Square last year, Indie Memphis is bringing the Found Footage Festival to the bigger space at the Young Ave. Deli on Saturday night. The festival is part screening, part comedy show - two guys scavenge old VHS tapes from thrift stores and then display their most hilarious finds. Get there early - this is sure to sell out.
If none of these events are your thing, there are plenty more on the calendar. Whatever you do this weekend, have a great time.
