5 Things to Do in Memphis This Weekend: 3/11 - 3/13
Happy Friday, Memphis! The weather is warmer, the sun is shining and there's plenty to do around town this weekend. If you want to get out, here are my top 5 reasons to do so:
1. 2011 Music Video Showcase, various Midtown locations, Friday - Sunday, $10 - $25
Live From Memphis is presenting their annual Music Video Showcase this weekend. The event features panels (including one by the people making the Antenna Club documentary) and three music video showcases. About half of the videos in the showcase feature Memphis bands. All of the panels are free, but tickets to the showcases are $10 each (or $25 for all three).
2. Young Frankenstein, Orpheum Theatre, Friday - Sunday, various times, $40 - $95
The Broadway musical version of the awesome Mel Brooks movie "Young Frankenstein" is showing at the Orpheum from now until Sunday. The show is bawdy and hilarious, and includes all of the most memorable parts of the movie. Also - for the first time ever, the Orpheum is allowing people to take drinks into the theater in "adult sippy cups".
3. Davilla 666 with True Sons of Thunder, Hi-Tone Cafe, Friday, 10 p.m., $10
Everyone's favorite Puerto Rican garage rock gods are returning to the Hi-Tone tonight. Their songs are loud, fast and sung mostly in Spanish. The True Sons of Thunder and Tyler Keith and the Apostles are opening. Doors are at 10 p.m., with bands most likelystarting around 11 p.m.
4. St. Patrick's Day Parade, Beale St., Saturday, 4 p.m., free
The annual Beale St. Patrick’s Day parade is happening on Saturday. It starts with the “Blessing of the Kegs” at Silky O’Sullivan’s at 4 p.m. The parade down Beale includes floats, marching bands, vintage cars and goats on leashes. After the parade, stick around for early St. Patty's day drinks at Silky's.
5. Memphis Roller Derby double header, Mid-South Fairgrounds Pipkin Building, Saturday, 6 p.m., $10
On Saturday night, the Memphis Hustlin' Rollers are playing Tallahassee at 6 p.m., and two home teams - the Women of Mass Destruction and the Angels of Death - will face off around 8 p.m. As usual, there will be beer, barbecue and merch. For this bout, MRD is partnering with the MLGCC - they're holding a bake sale and bringing drag queens for the halftime show.
If none of these events are your thing, there are plenty more on the calendar. No matter what you do this weekend, have a great time (and if you're coming to roller derby, find me and say hi.)
