5 Things to Do in Memphis This Weekend: 1/7 - 1/10

Happy Friday, Memphis! Start the year off right with one of these five events: 1. The Wiseguys present: Storytellers Unplugged, Germantown Community Theatre, Friday, 8 p.m., $7 The Wiseguys are bringing their improv comedy show Storytellers Unplugged to Germantown tonight. The PG-rated show features people telling true stories based on audience suggestions that are then acted out by the Wiseguys. Tonight's guest storyteller is Christiana Leibovitch (of Opera Memphis). 2. Elvis' Birthday Pops Concert, the Cannon Center, Saturday, 8 p.m., $28 - $90 The Memphis Symphony Orchestra is presenting a pops concert in honor of Elvis' birthday on Saturday night. They'll be playing all of the favorites, plus a few lesser-known tunes using Elvis' original orchestrations. Singer Terry Mike Jeffery (who's not a tribute artist, mind you) will be singing with the symphony. 3. DJ Buck Wilders and the Hook-Up, Hi-Tone Cafe, Saturday, 9 p.m., free DJ Buck Wilders and the Hook-Up at the Hi-Tone DJ Buck Wilders and his partner in crime, the Hook-Up, will be playing garage rock, funk and old-school soul at the Hi-Tone on Friday night. There's no cover, but for $5, you can get a glass and all of the PBR you can handle. A dance party is likely to break out, so come prepared. 4. (Extra)Ordinary: Documentary Photography from the American South, Brooks Museum of Art, Saturday, $7 The Brooks Museum's newest exhibit, (Extra)Ordinary:Documentary Photography from the American South, opens on Saturday. The show features photos taken by photographers from the Farm Security Administration between 1935 and 1941  to document the effects of the Great Depression. The photos will be on display with some works by William Eggelston and William Christenberry from the Brooks' permanent collection. The exhibit open Saturday and runs through April 10th. 5. World Dance Center Open House Party, Saturday, 9:30 a.m. - 5 p.m., Mid-South World Dance Center, free If you've always wanted to learn to dance, but aren't sure where to start, this is the event for you. For one day, the Mid-South World Dance Center is offering free classes in belly dance, modern dance, salsa, yoga and hoop dance.They'll also have chair massages and dance clothes for sale. Space in some of the classes is limited, so arrive a little early if there's one you want to check out. As always, if none of these events are your thing, check out the calendar for more.
