Meet Tommy Kha, Photographer
Meet Tommy Kha, Photographer
Everybody, meet Tommy Kha.
That's him, standing extremely still while I plant one on him. Tommy is photographer, and he's working on a series that involves him standing still while people kiss him. The effect is a little strange - sort of like kissing a very soft, extremely friendly wall.
Tommy was kind enough to answer a few questions about himself, his work, and his life in Memphis:
Name: Tommy Kha
Hometown: Memphis, Tenn.
Occupation: Photographer, Would-be Asian Sensation
Neighborhood: Midtown!
My favorite thing about my neighborhood is: the proximity of everything, art, music, Broad Avenue, Downtown, friends and dive bars.
The best place to take pictures in Memphis is: anywhere with good lighting.
I'm a regular at: the Hi-Tone. They know me too well since I've been going there since I was 16. I guess I kept showing up so much, they put me on their mural. I don't own red Dutch boots by the way. I love the Cove, everyone there is awesome. I also frequent at Five in One, my friends' art space.
The most fun I've had in Memphis this year was: Since I have been back in town, the Cooper-Young Festival and the Broad Avenue Annual Art Walk have been my favorite events. Oh, and hanging out with Arrah and the Ferns, Oh No Oh My, and seeing the 5.6.7.8's at the Hi-Tone.
I'm working on: several projects. I'm working on my BFA thesis, organizing a group Memphis photography exhibitions, starting a curatorial project, contributing to an upcoming photo blog and continuing my own personal work.
The Memphis arts scene is: There is an art scene in Memphis, albeit a small one. I like to see a forum for established and emerging artists living in Memphis about the art scene and how to develop it further. I'm excited for the Memphis College of Art graduate building is now on S. Main as it is putting practicing artists back there (though, many of us are not able to afford to live or have a gallery on S. Main). There are not many spaces for us to exhibit. I like to see more accessibility to get all people to see art, or art be seen by them. I'm especially excited for Broad Avenue's potential expansion!
I want to: have an impact on the world, or put a big dent in it.
It's karaoke night. I'll be singing: Definitely a '90s' song. "She", "Jumper" or "Closing Time".
I love Memphis because: Besides the creative scene, I identify much with Memphis' history, and Pho Hoa Binh's lemon grass tofu kind of sealed the deal.
