A Closing, Two Birthdays and My Ukulele, Taking Your Requests on WEVL

Birthday bows
It's my party, and I'll wear a large bow on my head if I want to. Thanks for all of the birthday love. You guys are the best. In other news: - It's WEVL pledge drive week, and you know what that means: I'll be on the air tomorrow during the Memphis Mystery Train (8 a.m. - 10 a.m.), hanging out and shaking you down to support the most unique radio station in Memphis. I'll have my ukulele with me and will take a request from the highest donor (but please, try to be reasonable). - Cooper-Young coffee shop Java Cabana is turning 18 this year. To celebrate, all lattes are $1.80 for the month of November. - Sad news: the Bookstar at Poplar Plaza (you know, the one that's in an old movie theater) is set to close in January. Let's hope whoever moves into the space keeps the amazing 1950s-style bathrooms and movie theater details.

i really hope they can save the building bookstar is in and not tear it down. my mom saw my fair lady and the sound of music there when i was still a theatre.

Why are they closing Bookstar??? That's my favorite bookstore around! Now I'm either going to have to drive out to bum f egypt...er, Wolfchase or order online. Not fair, not fair at all.

Bookstar is my favorite (and closest) book store. I remember seeing "The Big Chill" there when it was a movie theater.

Have heard rumors from everything that it is closing(which we now can confirm) to Kroger is buying out that part of the building to it getting demolished. Sad news all around. Great bookstore, and love spending time getting lost in my books.

I'm bummed it's closing, but can't say it's a surprise - look at the general lack of repairing anything for the last year - they knew they were getting out for a while. This could - and I know it's unlikely - but COULD leave an opening for a local/used bookstore in the university/midtown area, as it's a looooooong way to borders or wolfchase.

Trivia: Do you know where the spire that was originally on the top of the Bookstar is now located? :) I saw Purple Rain there, opening night, at midnight! Doesn't seem that long ago.

bookstar is definitely a neat little space, and i didn't mind that they hadn't renovated in a while. luckily, there's still davis-kidd, which is independent and much closer to midtown than wolfchase.

Talked to one of the employees, said they went to renew the lease a couple weeks ago and the landlord wasn't interested. I don't think its Kroger because there isn't enough parking at Poplar for a Kroger the size of the one that's there now, so it would mean either facing away from Poplar or tearing down and rebuilding about as far back as the current back parking lot, neither of which would be worth the kind of cash to make the landlord dump a national chain without notice.
