Things to Do in Memphis This Weekend 8/6 - 8/8
Things to Do in Memphis This Weekend 8/6 - 8/8
Happy Friday, Memphis! Here are five reasons to get out of your house this weekend:
1. Strange Fruit Pop-Up Shop, Odessa, Friday, 6 p.m. - 10 p.m., free
For one night only, you can try on Strange Fruit's amazing collection of vintage urban clothing and accessories before you buy. They're having a pop-up shop at Odessa tonight. It's free to get in, and there will be music from DJ Homework. There's also going to be a photobooth so you can show off your fabulous new clothes.
2. Snowden Beer Festival, Snowden Grove Park, Saturday, 2 p.m., $35
Head to Southhaven and grab a cup on Saturday afternoon. The first-ever Snowden Beer Festival will feature 70 different beers from the US and abroad. They'll have food from area restaurants, too. Your souvenir glass entitles you to as many samples as you'd like, but the festival managers ask that you kindly behave yourself. (It should be obvious, but this one is adults only.)
3. Official Elvis Tribute Artist Last Chance Finals, Hard Rock Cafe, Saturday - Monday, 9 p.m., $10
Elvis week is upon us, and what better way to kick things off than with the Last Chance tribute artist finals. It's the last chance for performers to get a bid to the big deal official tribute artist competition later in the week. On Saturday and Sunday, 12 Elvii will compete each night in semi-finals, and on Monday night, the final four will battle it out. I'm one of the competition judges, so if you come out, be sure to say hi.
4. Daniel Tacker Art Opening, Eclectic Eye, Friday, 6 p.m.
One of my favorite local artists, Daniel Tacker, is having an opening for his show at Eclectic Eye tonight. His work is amazing - it's big and colorful, and a lot of the paintings are Memphis-centric. Daniel has shown his work all over town. Stop by, meet the artist, and if you've got some cash, pick up one of his works.
5. River City Tanlines with the Pleasure Kills, Hi-Tone Cafe, Sunday, 10 p.m., $5
Yeah, yeah, it's a Sunday, but that doesn't mean you can't go see some awesome music. The River City Tanlines are playing the HiTone with the Pleasure Kills on Sunday night at 9 p.m. The Tanlines are led by Alicja Trout and her awesome Flying V. They play straight-up fun garage rock. I'm not sure about the Pleasure Kills, but you should give them a chance. Judging from the Facebook event, the show is actually going to start at 9 p.m.
If I've left something off the list, leave it in the comments. Whatever you do this weekend, have a great time.

It's also tax free weekend. It's not just school supplies--clothing is tax free as well.

Hi, The Pleasure Kills are on a five week national tour from San Francisco in support of our new album, and we are so excited to get to play with River City Tanlines in Memphis! Reviewers compare us to Blondie, Josie Cotton, Nikki Corvette, etc. Come on out! http://www.myspace.com/thepleasurekills - Jeff
