Come Together: Rock For Love 4 Preview

While being a musician has some serious benefits, health insurance isn't usually one of them. That's why many local musicians get health care through the Church Health Center. Since 1987, the CHC has been providing affordable health care to Memphis' working uninsured. This weekend, 17 local acts will come together to play at Rock for Love, an annual benefit show for the CHC. Rock for Love 2010 Poster Now in its fourth year, Rock for Love is a force to be reckoned with. "It's something the Memphis music scene has rallied around," said event organizer Marvin Stockwell. "It's a point of pride that the scene is stepping up. We have a big collective heart." Last year, $23,500 was raised for the CHC during Rock for Love. That's enough money to completely run the CHC for a week (that includes the clinic, the Hope and Healing Center, and all of the CHC's preventative health care). This year's Rock for Love is the biggest ever. There will be five shows over four days, a private barbecue at Ardent Studios, and an online auction. All of the bands are donating their time, so 100 percent of the ticket sales will go to the CHC. The HiTone is donating 10% of their bar sales for the entire weekend, and Shangri-La records is donating 20% of their Saturday sales, as well. The shows start on Thursday, August 19th and run through Saturday, August 21st. Advance tickets are on sale for each show through the HiTone. Here's what's happening each night: Thursday, August 19th Where: HiTone Cafe When: 9 p.m. Cover: $5 Who's playing: Charming indie-folk trio Star and Micey, country darling Holly Cole (and the Memphis Dawls), the Candy Company, and local rapper Teflon Don.
