The Hold Steady's Ode to the Hi-Tone
The Hold Steady's Ode to the Hi-Tone
Before you read any further, watch this video of the Hold Steady performing "Sequestered in Memphis".
Now, tell me it's not about the bathroom at the Hi-Tone.
No matter which bathroom the song references - when the Hold Steady launched into the song at the Hi-Tone last night, the sold-out crowd went nuts. I jumped off of the chair I was standing on and ran straight into the crowd, jumping and singing along like it wasn't 900 degrees in the club.
The Hold Steady is touring in support of their newest record, "Heaven is Whenever". Their stop in Memphis was especially cool, given that Memphis music legend Steve Selvidge is the band's new guitarist.
The setlist was a mix of newer songs bookended by older favorites ("Stuck Between Stations", "Chips Ahoy", and an encore of "Massive Nights").
Last night was the first time I've ever been to a sold out show at the Hi-Tone. It was kind of cool seeing the line for the door wrapped from the door past the Circle K and around the corner. Inside, it was packed. And hot. Ridiculously, uncomfortably hell-hot.
It was one of those great rock'n'roll shows, the kind that make you sort of useless the next day. And it was totally worth it.

Great show indeed. Glad no one tried to fight you.
Here's one of my favorite videos of the song - Sequestered in "Muppets": http://bit.ly/36UZmA
Nice cameo of newscaster Craig Finn at 3:04.
