Crusade for Bike Lanes, Celebrate the Antenna Club, and Vote for the Best of Memphis
Voting for the Memphis Flyer's annual Best of Memphis poll started today. I love the BOM - people here get really excited about it every year (I think categories like "Best Cougar Bar", the epic party they throw for the winners and the fact that there's a write-in option).
Anyway - the reason it's the photo of the day is because this blog was nominated for Best Blog. Yay! (My Twitter account was also nominated.) I filled my ballot out this morning. You have to finish at least 50% of the ballot for it to be counted, and you can only vote once.
In other news:
- There's a documentary in progress about the legendary (and closed) Antenna Club. The filmmakers have started a Kickstarter account to raise money to complete the project, and they've already gotten 20 percent of their goal. Also, there's going to be an Antenna Club reunion show on July 30th and 31st at the HiTone, Murphy's and Nocturnal (the former Antenna) featuring bands like the Reigning Sound.
- Memphis isn't exactly a bike-friendly city, but that could be about to change. Last month, 30 miles of federally funded bike lanes were excluded from the year's city development plans, causing much outrage (including that of Mayor A.C. Wharton, a man not usually given to outrage). On Friday, there's going to be a bike action at city hall at 12:30. Show up on your favorite method of human-powered transit: your bike, your skates, your feet and your unicycles are all welcome.
