5 Things to Do in Memphis This Weekend: 7/16 - 7/18
5 Things to Do in Memphis This Weekend: 7/16 - 7/18
Happy Friday, everybody! Here are my picks for the coolest things to do in Memphis this weekend.
1. Memphis Raqs present Tribal Debauchery, Nocturnal, Sunday, 7:30 p.m., $8
The students and performers from Memphis Raqs are having a tribal dance show at Nocturnal on Sunday night. Expect belly dance, tribal fusion dance and African dance at the 18+ event. If you're lucky, maybe Liz from Memphis Raqs will perform with her pet snake.
2. The Wiseguys: Storytellers Unplugged, Full Moon Club, Saturday, 8:30 p.m., $5
Local improv comedy group the Wiseguys will test their skills on Saturday night when they do long form sketches based on true tales from guest storytellers. This weekend, the storytellers are Memphis Flyer reporter Chris Davis and Richard Jones, the winner of the 2010 Funniest Person in Memphis contest.
3. Memphis Adult Kickball Tournament, Willow Park, Saturday, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m., free
All good things must end sometime, and that time is now for the 2010 adult kickball league season. On Saturday, packs of grownups in matching t-shirts printed with team names like "Balls Deep" and "Kickin' It Old School" will take the fields at Willow Park in tournament play. If you're not sure who to root for, may I suggest the underdogs - the Hi-Tone Hellions, who make up for their lack of kickball skill with plenty of enthusiasm (and beer).
4. School of Rock All-Stars, Hi-Tone Cafe, Saturday, 6 p.m., $15
There's going to be a rare early Saturday show at the Hi-Tone this weekend, mostly because the band is way underage. The nationally acclaimed student music program School of Rock is bringing their "Live Aid Remade" tour to 46 cities, paying tribute to the original LiveAid. A portion of all ticket sales will be donated to Music for Relief, an organization that is helping with earthquake recovery in Haiti.
5. Star and Micey, Otherlands, Sunday, 8 p.m., $5
Star and Micey, my favorite adorable trio of local boys, are playing at Otherlands on Sunday night with Apartment 5 from Fayetteville, Ark. The venue is a coffee shop, so it's a little more intimate than a club. The show is smoke-free and all ages, and Otherlands has awesome coffee (and beer).
If none of these events look like fun, check out the I Love Memphis events calendar. Whatever you do this weekend, have a great time!

If you haven't heard about this I hope you'll check it out and please share the news. The one comment on most feedback forms last night was MORE PROMOTION! So please help if you can.
We need all communities to participate and share the series with their members. That's the best way for us to get to know each other and support each other.
Thank you!

The INDIE MEMPHIS Freedom Series launches this weekend!
The first night was a BLAST! Last night INDIE MEMPHIS hosted Complaints Choir at Studio On The Square. Filmmakers Frank and Lisa Mauceri joined us and took part in the post-film conversation which was moderated by Jon Sparks.
We were pleased with a diverse and fully engaged audience, and thrilled when Bill Baker and the Memphis Complaints Choir performed with Davy Ray to close out the event.
Tonight's program at Latino Memphis at 7pm promises to be an incredible event as well, with two excellent films in Spanish with English subtitles. The post-film conversation will be in English & Spanish, so come join us and get your language skills on, catch some great films, all while building community in Memphis!
La Voz De Los Sin Voz is the story of a guerilla radio station in Chiapas Mexico, and Intimidad is a love story in a documentary, in the context of Mexican-American border life and economic struggle. Both are beautiful films, and we look forward to the post film conversation moderated by bilingual freedom activist Kyle Kordsmeier. Hope to see you there!
If you haven't already, please include the Freedom Series weekend schedule in your announcements and newsletters, on your websites and schedules. If you would like jpgs of logos, the venue map or poster graphics, I am happy to send you whatever you need. Please link to the website as we are constantly updating it. http://www.indiememphis.com/freedom
We encourage small groups from community organizations to attend together, and warn that seating is limited, so it is best to let us know in advance.
Thank you so much for your participation and support. See you there!
