Free Drinks, Free Admission to BBQ Fest, and Free Mix Tapes
This is a part of a giant Memphis Redbirds themed mural on the windows of the downtown Huey's. Let's hope the Redbirds win tonight in their game against the Portland Beavers at Autozone Park.
In other news:
- There's a party celebrating Memphis Connect's first birthday at Playhouse on the Square tonight. There are going to be drinks, hors de oeuvres, a keynote by Tom Schmitt and some great Memphis entertainment (including a performance by Teflon Don).
- If you want to check out Barbecue Fest on the cheap, Paul R. told me that admission to the park is free on Thursday and Friday during lunch. You still won't be able to score food from the competing teams unless you know someone, but there will be barbecue and other food vendors in the park.
- About a month ago, I made a very Memphis mix CD for a friend that I was trying to convince to move to Memphis. Alas, it didn't work, and said friend will be headed to Austin any day now. He did assure me that it wasn't the mix tape's fault. I've got three copies of my hand-picked Memphis Music Sampler to give away. All you have to do to win is leave a comment below telling me who your favorite Memphis musician is. I'll pick the winners tomorrow morning.

Well we will be new to Memphis this summer (arriving in July) and would love to get a sample of the real music from Memphis. Sad to say I am pretty clueless on this subject, so my favorite so far is Elvis. I know - a little pathetic. I promise to work on it once I am there!

Harlan Bobo - Too Much Love! Rhodes offers its own Memphis music mix for our prospective families to download before visiting the campus. They have some fun Memphis originals listed: http://connect.rhodes.edu/tour/rhode-trip/memphis-music-mix

I'd love to see what's on your mix! I made a few of those in the past--songs that mention Memphis, with a few local artists thrown in. I have fond high school memories of seeing both Cory Branan & Garrison Starr live as their careers got started-I think they are both talented artists with Memphis roots.

My favorite Memphis musician is Al Kapone. I know Memphis has a ton more amazing artists/bands. But Al Kapone is something special that I believe more people should know about.

How about Jennifer Bynum Green? She was the lady whose voice made DJay cry at the church in 'Hustle & Flow.' She was a guest soloist at our church a few times and I'm with DJay. Amazing.

I used to live in Memphis, now I live in Pennsylvania where I have yet to find a single great band. From my adopted hometown, I love Pezz. They are so good live and they make me all happy inside. (I'm not kidding, by the way. No live music here. About 1 band every 1 or 2 months. Pathetic.)
