5 Things to Do in Memphis This Weekend - 5/14 - 5/16

Happy Friday, everybody! Here's my shortlist of the top five things to do in Memphis this weekend. Have fun! 1. Memphis in May World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest, Tom Lee Park, Friday - Saturday, $8 For the next two days, downtown is going to smell crazy good as teams from all over the world compete to make the best shoulder, ribs, and whole hog barbecue. The general public can't eat from the tents (that is, unless you know someone), but there are plenty of barbecue vendors. It's worth walking around to check out the booth decorations and hear the bands. 2. Fashion Forecast, Cadre Building, Friday, 7:30 p.m., $35 - $75 Up and coming designers will present items from their collections tonight at the Cadre building to benefit Dress for Success. Dress for Success provides professional attire and career counseling for disadvantaged women in Memphis. 3. Big Star, Levitt Shell, Saturday, 6 p.m., $20 This one is major - Saturday night's Big Star show is quite possibly the last one ever. It's going to be a tribute show for Alex Chilton featuring Mike Mills from REM, Brendan Benson of the Raconteurs, Sondre Lerche, and the lead singer of Superdrag. It's going to be seriously awesome. Check out this preview of Sondre Lerche singing "Ballad of El Goodo" at South By Southwest earlier this year: 4. John Paul Keith and the One Four Fives with the Bullet Proof Vests, Hi-Tone Cafe, Saturday, 10 p.m., $7 The One Four Fives have quickly become one of my favorite Memphis bands - they've got a sound that's both classic and modern, and their songs are super catchy. They're playing Saturday night at the Hi-Tone with the Bulletproof Vests. The show doesn't start until 10, so there's plenty of time to walk over after the Big Star show at the Shell. 5. Lauren Coulson: "Submerged Awakenings," Material (2553 Broad), Friday, 6 p.m., free Local artist Lauren Coulson is having an opening for her new show at Material tonight. "Submerged Awakenings" features layered prints on transparent film that speak to meditation and altered states of consciousness. Material is located in a storefront on Broad. It was founded to give emerging artists to have their first shoes, give existing artists a place to experiment, and promote the arts in Memphis. Have a great weekend, no matter what you do.
