Book Report: "Radio City" by Bruce Eaton

Radio City and Radio City
There are two thoughts about the anthemic "September Gurls" presented in Bruce Eaton's book about  Big Star's second record, "Radio City". Easton says that the song "sounds like the house band in power pop heaven." Big Star's lead singer (and principal songwriter) Alex Chilton disagrees. "It's not a song that grabs me. The musical structure grabs me, but the overall song doesn't - and that's the way I feel about every bit of music on that record." Eaton's book is part of the 33 1/3 series, a collection of pocket-sized volumes about classic records. It covers Big Star's members, history, and the making of one of the greatest records to ever come out of Memphis. "Radio City" is made up of interviews with the members of Big Star and Ardent Records recording engineer John Fry, as well as some of Eaton's personal relationship with "Radio City". There are a ton of fun facts in the book, especially for recording nerds. There's a lot of discussion of what equipment and techniques were used to get the record's distinct sound. Eaton takes care to leave in personal details about the people making the record (for example,  drummer Jody Stephens loves it when he sees people playing air drums at Big Star shows). You'll get your chance to play air drums when Big Star plays a tribute show for Alex Chilton at the Levitt Shell on May 15th.
