Memphis Bands at SXSW: A Band-By-Band Preview
If you're in Austin for SXSW Music, you've got the opportunity to see 11 awesome bands from Memphis over the next four days. Here are your options:
- Cory Branan: Cory Branan is a singer-songwriter who plays a mean guitar and has a completely amazing storytelling ability. He combines lush images, a gravelly voice and a wicked sense of humor to make songs that are engaging and personal. He also plays some amazingly silly songs live. Like this one, about his drink of choice:
- Harlan T. Bobo: Yesterday, I was trying to describe Harlan T. Bobo's music to someone who had never heard it. The best description I could come up with was, "If you take everything wonderful about Memphis music and roll it up into one guy, then give him a mysterious streak and some costumes, that's Harlan T. Bobo." His first record, "too much love" is one of the greatest break-up albums of all time. His third record, "Sucker", will be released in April on Goner Records.
- Star and Micey: Star and Micey are one of the newer bands playing at SXSW. They released their self-titled first record in 2009. Their sound is solidly indie-pop, and they're very charming. This is their first trip to SXSW, so make them feel welcome.
- Magic Kids: I absolutely adore the Magic Kids. They're a large group of excited young musicians who sound a little like Phil Spector and the Beach Boys. Their single, "Hey Boy" is a shout-out to the dreamy boy-girl songs of the 1960s. The Magic Kids will be playing the Goner Records party on Saturday night.
- River City Tanlines: I have the biggest girl crush on River City Tanlines frontwoman Alicja Trout. She's a garage rock goddess. The Tanlines play fast, loud rock'n'roll that will make you want to get up and dance.

- Lord T. and Eloise: Memphis' only aristocrunk rappers, Lord T. and Eloise will be in Austin this week. Lord T. is a dandy in a powdered wig and a blue ring, and Eloise was born with skin of solid gold. They're rich. Really rich. And they're going to let you know about it at the Memphis Music Foundation Showcase on Thursday night at Barbarella.
- Hill Country Revue: On the band's Web site, Cody Dickinson describes the Hill Country Revue's sound as "really nasty". The band plays a funky, sultry blend of country, blues and soul. The sound is down and dirty in a particularly Memphis way.
- 8 Ball and MJG: Memphis isn't just a rock'n'roll town. The city is home to a lot of great rappers. Memphis rappers 8 Ball and MJG have released 10 studio albums since 1993, and have another scheduled for release this year. They'll be playing at the Memphis Music Foundation showcase on Thursday night at Barbarella.
- Ben Nichols / Lucero: It took a while, but local boys Lucero finally made it big with their country-tinged rock'n'roll. Frontman Ben Nichols is doing a solo show as well as a show with the entire band.
- Big Star: Memphis legends Big Star will be playing Saturday night to promote their new box set, Keep an Eye on the Sky. Big Star is possibly one of the most influential indie rock bands ever, so this show is going to be huge. It's Saturday night at Antones at 12:30 a.m.
If you're interested in seeing some Memphis bands in Austin this week, check out the South By Southwest schedule for times and locations. I'll be at the Memphis Music Foundation showcase Thursday night with the I Love Memphis sign, if you'd like your picture made.
