This Weekend in Memphis: 2/19 - 2/21
Happy Friday, Memphis! Here's the shortlist of things going on in town this weekend.
1. Family Day, Dixon Gallery and Gardens, Saturday, 10 a.m., free
Bring your family and tour the Dixon's "Monet to Matisse" exhibit on Saturday. There are going to be games, storytelling, plein air painting, and music by the Hot Pink Paperclips. Be sure to also check out the works of local metalsmiths that are on display. All ages are welcome.
2. University of Memphis Tigers vs. SMU, FedEx Forum, Saturday, 7 p.m., prices vary
When I looked at the Tigers' schedule to check the time of tomorrow's game, I was a little disappointed to have to scroll almost to the bottom of the page. The end of basketball season is nigh, and you've only got a few more chances to catch the Tigers at the Forum. They're coming off of a win over Tulane, and the game should be a fun one to watch.
3. Folk Alliance International Conference, Cook Convention Center, all weekend, prices vary
The Memphis-based Folk Alliance is holding their annual conference this weekend. It's not quite like a scene out of "A Mighty Wind" - expect a lot of younger people with guitars, loads of street buskers and a few not-to-be-missed public showcases. Cory Branan is hosting a public show at Otherlands tomorrow night.
4. Sazerac Swing Band, Rhumba Room, Friday, 7 p.m., Free before 7, $7 cover after
Slip on your dancing shoes and go old school at the Rhumba Room tonight. The Sazerac Swing Band will be playing music from the 1930s and 1940s. If you're unsure of the moves, there's going to be a free lesson at 7 p.m.
5. Soweto Gospel Choir, GPAC, Saturday, 8 p.m., prices vary
The Soweto Gospel Choir from South Africa will be at GPAC on Saturday. Expect fantastic vocals, loads of color, and an uplifting performance. The group has been touring since 2003.
No matter what you do this weekend, go outside today. The sun is shining, and it's starting to feel like spring.
