Harry's Big Adventure Gives Kids a Bug's Eye View
Harry's Big Adventure Gives Kids a Bug's Eye View
Here's a warning to the adults taking their children to the "Harry's Big Adventure: My Bug Life" exhibit at the Children's Museum of Memphis: there is a solid chance that at some point during your trip around the exhibit hall, you may be a little grossed out.
But, we all know that the more disgusted adults get, the more excited kids get. I watched a family walk into the model house in the exhibit, open the cabinet below the sink and have two very distinct reactions to the live cockroaches crawling all over household cleaning supplies (behind class). The adults immediately shrieked in horror. One of the children stared in wonder and asked why she wasn't able to touch the live bugs.
The exhibit gives kids a bug's eye view of the world and takes them inside different insect habitats. Each area features activities and information about the insects that call it home. There are tanks with water bugs in the cypress grove, a butterfly-chasing area in the meadow, and a large ant farm in the forest.
To enter Harry's Big Adventure, you walk through something called the Zoom Room. It's a tunnel that resembles a wing lined with screens that play video of insects in action. There's a constant soundtrack of buzzing, chirping, and flapping wings.
The exhibit is interactive - there art supplies and bugs to trace and an Build-a-Bug game where kids can pick an area, assemble an insect and release it into the wild to see if it's properly equipped to live in it's habitat. Throughout the exhibit, there are guide bugs (like Paw Paw the Cockroach) that give information about their lives.
"Harry's Big Adventure: My Bug World" is going to be at the Children's Museum of Memphis until June 13, 2010.
