Found: The Space Marine

The Space Marine, Memphis, Tenn.

Behold the Space Marine, another found Memphis Scavenger Hunt item.

The Space Marine stands proudly on a pedestal outside of a Games Workshop in an office park in an industrial part of Memphis. He looms large over the parking lot, his tiny body and giant gun ready for action.

The Space Marine was created by Games Workshop as part of their tabletop game Warhammer 40,000. According to Wikipedia, Space Marines are "giant, genetically-enhanced super-soldiers with world-destroying firepower and unswerving, fanatical loyalty to the Emperor of Mankind". This particular version seems a bit stumpy for a genetically-enhanced super soldier, but I'm not one to judge.

Games Workshop is a huge international tabletop gaming company that's based in the UK. Their U.S. distribution facility is located here in Memphis. There's a small retail shop at the Memphis facility where you can pick up Games Workshop games and miniatures.

The store and Battle Bunker there closed in March of last year. It is, however, planning to reopen in the next year or so. If you want to get your 40k fix, you can go to Gamerz Depot, 9991 Hwy 178 in Olive Branch, MS, which is like 7 miles from the Bunker. Gamerz Depot is open 5pm-10pm Tues-Fri, and 10a-10p, Saturdays.

I pass this statue going to/from work every day. I've taken a few pix over the years, and like you, i found it hard to get a picture that really shows the soldier in detail. He's all one color and matte finished, and the sky is so bright. This is definitely "uniquely Memphis"!
