Things to do in Memphis this Weekend: 1/22 - 1/24

Happy weekend, everybody! There's plenty going on in Memphis over the next three days, starting with these five little suggestions: 1. The Mighty Electric St. Jude Band, Friday, T.J. Mulligan's Pinch District, free, 6 p.m.
Mighty Electic St. Jude Band
The Mighty Electric St. Jude Band is playing at T.J. Mulligan's tonight. The 10-member band always plays for free, but any donations to their tip jar are given to St. Jude. They've got some demo songs, so you can get excited about the show before you go. 2. The J & K Self-Rising Cabaret, TheatreSouth, Friday and Saturday, $20 Veteran actresses Jenny Madden and Kim Justis will be singing songs, eating home-cooked meals and talking about what it means to be Southern. I've heard that you need to bring your appetite to the show, so come prepared. 3. Jeffery James and the Haul and Watchpaper, The Buccaneer, Friday, 8 p.m. $5 Local favorites Jeffery James and the Haul will be playing with newcomers Watchpaper at Memphis' oldest pirate bar. The Bucc is tiny, so you may want to get there a little early to get some standing room (and so that you don't miss opener Jacob Jones). 4. Orpheus, Clark Opera Memphis Center, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, 7 p.m., various prices Opera Memphis is staging their first-ever show in their beautiful East Memphis space. They'll be staging three different versions of the classic opera, each featuring Orpheus sung in a different voice (a tenor, a countertenor, and a mezzo soprano). The opera will be sung in English, so it's totally accessible. 5. Metal in Memphis, Dixon Gallery and Gardens, Opens Sunday, regular museum admission The Metal in Memphis exhibition shows off the work of the artists-in-residence at Memphis' National Ornamental Metal Museum. The show features works in metal by Mary Catherine Floyd, Jacob Brown, Jim Masterson, Kevin Burge, Andy Dohner and Jeannie Tomlinson Saltmarsh. If none of these events make you want to leave the house, check out the I Love Memphis events calendar for even more to do this weekend.
