This Weekend in Memphis - 12/11 - 12/13
Maybe it's a sign of being a grown up, but I'm finding the holidays overwhelming for the first time ever. I need something to get me in the right spirit, take my mind off of it, and finish my Christmas shopping for me. If you do, too, try these events in Memphis this weekend:
1. P&H Art Bazaar, P&H Cafe, Saturday, 12 p.m. - 4 p.m., free
The annual Art Bazaar at the P&H (one of midtown's favorite watering holes) features more than 30 artists selling their work. If you're not done shopping yet, you can probably get it done in one trip through the P&H. I don't have a list of all of the participating artists, but I know that the lovely ladies who make Rock Paper Scissors lamps will be there.
2. Pre-Sent Present, Theatreworks, Friday 12/11 - 12/20, 8 p.m., $20 adults, $15 students / seniors
Jerre Dye, the creative director of Voices of the South, gave local artists Christmas gifts a few months ago. The artists then created pieces based on the gifts that they received. Pre-sent Present is the presentation of those gift-inspired pieces of art. (Confused? Listen to Jerre talk about the show.)
I'll be at tonight's show having a photo booth with the I Love Memphis sign. Come by, say hi, let me take your picture.
3. Singing Christmas Tree, Bellevue Baptist Church, Friday 12/11 - 12/16, $3 - $12
For 34 years, Bellevue Baptist Church has put on a production of the Singing Christmas Tree. This year, the show features a 44-foot tall Christmas tree, 100,000 lights and 300 cast members, singers and musicians.
4. Shangri-la Christmas Party, Hi-Tone Cafe, 10 p.m. Friday 12/11, $7, or $5 with a canned food donation
Shangri-la records is having their annual Christmas party at the Hi-Tone tonight. Memphis bands Glorie and the Dirty Streets (who sound like they're going to be pretty cool - they've got a bluesy classic rock sound) will be playing. Buck Wilders and the Hook-Up are going to DJ, so come prepared to dance.
5. Great River Christmas Boat Parade, Harbor Landing, 6 p.m., Saturday 12/12, free
The Great River Christmas Boat parade is like a regular Christmas parade minus the floats, plus boats. The boat owners that dock at Mud Island Marina will be showing off a veritable flotilla of holiday delight. It sounds a little crazy, but kind of fun. Dress warmly!
Have a great weekend, everybody. If there's anything that I left off the list, feel free to add it in the comments.
